Kazakhstan Police use stun grenades to disperse protesters in Almaty

Thousands of people are protesting in several Kazakh cities over a hike in energy prices. Protests erupted on Sunday in the oil-rich town of Zhanaozen and have since spread to other regions. Police cordoned off the main square in Almaty.

In Kazakhstan, people take to the streets, they are already engaging in battles with the gendarmes. The reason was the increase in prices for liquefied gas to (in Russian rubles) 20 rubles per liter. In Russia, by the way, its price is about 30 rubles, and nothing, people put up with it.

The higher authorities at the epicenter of the protest, in the Caspian region, have rolled back the price to 8 rubles per liter (this is what life-giving protests are doing). But this is not enough for the people – they have put forward a new slogan: “Down with the old man.” This is about the local national leader, 81-year-old Nazarbayev, who actually rules the country during the decorative Transit (“a young and promising politician” – as it is customary to describe it in Northern Eurasia).

The events in Kazakhstan are interesting to us for several reasons. Let me walk very briefly, in many respects cynically.
1. Until now, the Transit of Power in Kazakhstan was considered an exemplary transfer of power in Northern Eurasia. The local authorities and the oligarchy (compradors) passed the upheavals: everyone remained at their posts and money. The Proles survived in silence.
Other Transit options were unacceptable for the Russian bosses. The transformation of Belarus into a Eurasian Haiti, oligarchic-archaic freemen in Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia. The persecution of the Karimov family in Uzbekistan. Rodo-cave Turkmenistan.
Probably, now the Kremlin will strongly think whether this Kazakh option is so good, if the old elbasy is not eliminated from it.

2. There are about 3.5 million Russians left in Kazakhstan. If a “national liberation revolution” starts there, then very many will be in trouble. It was already going in the 90s, but it was stopped, and now it can be much worse. I have an aunt and three cousins who fled from Alma-Ata to Russia in 1992-93, so from their words I can imagine how this can be. Russia should be ready to quickly accept a million, or even two, Russian refugees (more broadly, not Turks, since we are talking about Germans, Ukrainians, etc.)

3. It is likely that China will take advantage of the rapid collapse of Kazakhstan. And “flight time” will be counted not from Kharkov, but from Uralsk and Pavlodar. And the Chinese troops will stand in front of Samara and Chelyabinsk. The question of dividing the next failed state will surely arise, and the same Uralsk and Pavlodar, as well as Ust-Kamenogorsk, will be taken to Russia. Unlike Ukraine, the majority of Russians will understand and accept this, for whom Kazakhs are something alien.

4. There are several million guest workers from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan in Kazakhstan. Where will they rush in the “national revolution”? And what will become of the countries of S. Asia in general, for which Kazakhstan was an important stabilizing factor?
(Even if the protests in Kazakhstan are suppressed, these questions will not go away, but will only get worse as Nazarbayev falls into a vegetable state)
